Fighting Spam the Right Way

by Amanda Gamdana

Spam today has made many internet users rethink about the usability of emails as a mode of communication so even the spread of computer virus is a matter of great concern. With the signing of the Can Spam bill by President Bush in December 2003, the first standard was set against bulk unsolicited email which are of commercial in nature.

The bill was naturally approved and voted by the Senate by a vote 97 to 0 and in essence stops a sender from sending unsolicited bulk commercial emails using tools like dictionaries for generating such mailers and hiding their identities via false return addresses. More over, these emails can not carry a subject line which is deceptive and must have an opt out provision. The law prevents the sender from accessing addresses from websites and any violation of the law can entail imprisonment up to one year.

Another point of discussion is that nowadays even greater numbers of spam is generated from other countries. These emails are harder to fight, because they come from outside our country’s laws and regulations. The Internet is not bound by any country blockades so controlling this problem becomes more difficult thought the laws seem to be good. So what is the solution? Here are 5 most effective spam protecting rules:

Number 1: Avoid displaying your email address on the net at all cost. There are products called ’spam spider’ which is used for scanning the internet for collecting e main addresses to build a mailing list. If you are one of those who wish to go deeper about the subject of ’spam spider’ do a search with those words on the net - the results would leave you awe-struck. There is an interesting counter attack site called WebPoison.org which is an open source project which fights ’spambots’ and ’spam spiders’ effectively because it simply sends them false web pages containing rubbish email addresses.

Number 2: Get yourself a software which blocks spam. Chances are that you might decide to go in for the professional version but whatever you do getting the software is a must since it would help you save plenty of time. The software is not foolproof, but they really do help although you will usually have to carry out some manual set up to block certain types of email.

Number 3: You could have several email addresses. There are several free email address you could choose from through which you could receive newsletters and have another address as a back up. This is somewhat like your friends have your private cell number but all the rest of your contacts have your official number.

Number 4: The most frequently encountered problem with spam is that they have attachments and these contain dangerous viruses. Corporations often have filters that don’t let such things pass to you. Next, look for mail filter service providers.

Number 5: These days email services can be had with the facility of ‘bulk mail’ baskets. In case your existing service provider does not support this concept, try to switch to another vendor. All you have to do is to collect such mails and put then in a bulk email pile and ‘choose’ to let them dwell in your circle. Any spam blocking software would also run with the same principles but there is nothing like having a couple of extra precautions - so it is worth looking into.

Protecting Children with Mental Health Problems

by Marion Jones

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves et cetera. Predators often have mental disorders that prevent them from functioning properly in normal society. Children with mental disorders are often the prey of these predators, and sometimes children with mental illnesses are the predators themselves. In fact, the distributor of one of the most dangerous viruses online came from an eighteen-year old from England.

Dangers mental illnesses: Not everyone with a mental disorder is a danger to society. In general, predators with mental disorders are the victims of sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental illnesses that pose a threat to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that lurk on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental disorder. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, because many mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children must live by and stick to the rules. Do not leave room for doubt when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental illnesses will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, and so forth. This makes it harder as a parent to protect your child. However, it is important that you enforce the laws. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these laws, since some children with dangerous problems can be violent.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring in the police and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may have to pay court fees and go through all sorts of rigmarole, but I can promise you that it will benefit you in the end. As a mother who has raised two boys with dangerous mental diseases, I can tell you it won’t be easy but it can be done.

Children with mental disorders often have brilliant minds that can usually get round any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take extra time than normal to monitor your child’s activity online. Teach your child that giving out personal information is restricted and encourage them to ask your permission when thinking about divulging name, phone number or other information online.

Leave room for your child to take some responsibility and always encourage your child to participate in family discussions that involve them. Encourage the child to protect their safety by encouraging them to report any misdemeanour committed against them.

One of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health issues is encouraging him/her to stay away from violent images and pornography. It is next to impossible to keep them clear of this trash. Still, it can be done, if you set a good example for the child to follow.

It is important that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories and so forth without demeaning the child. You will be amazed at the knowledge children with certain mental disorders have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can give you for dealing with children with major mental illnesses, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For additional child safety tips for children with mental disorders seek advice from a qualified counsellor.

Remember: Children learn what they see and hear.

Credit Card Fraud Growing In Today’s Digital World

by Eric Jilson

Like anything else involving money, credit cards are subject to fraud and theft. In most cases, in fact, fraud protection is even more important with credit cards, where big balances can be run up without the real cardholder ever knowing. Protecting your credit cards from fraud is a two-stop process that begins with preventing fraud from taking place and continues with taking action when you detect or suspect that fraud has been committed.

Precautions are simple. One of the best ways to prevent fraud is to sign your card. A signature on the back of the card helps verify that the person using the card is the same person to whom the card actually belongs. If you can get a card with your picture on it, do so. Many companies are now offering picture cards, which, along with a signature on the back, will help merchants determine whether the person attempting to use the card is the actual cardholder.

Another precaution is to never turn loose of your card or at least never let it out of your sight. This is particularly good advice in tourist areas, where typical fraud involves swiping cards more than once or making sophisticated copies of your credit card.

It’s also a good idea never to divulge the details of your credit card with anyone, particularly over the internet. Always destroy any documents, electronic or otherwise, that may contain your credit card information. Fraudsters often sift through trash, and that can include trash on your computer, to get your credit card information. It’s worth remember that con artists may also pose as reputable business people or even credit card company representatives, and you should never give your information, particularly critical information like your Personal Identification Number or PIN, out to anyone.

Not only is it not a good idea to let other people such as friends and family use your credit card, it is also illegal. While those people may have your best interests at heart, their carelessness is not a great protection from identity theft and they may probably will not take the same precautions you would. Instead, make the purchases for them with your card and allow them to pay you back.

Keeping your personal information up to date is important as well. Let your supplier know if you move or change your name. Doing this will keep your valuable information out of the wrong hands.

It goes without saying that a lost or stolen credit card should be reported immediately to limit the damage that can be done to your charge account and, consequently, your credit score. Also, any transactions that show up on your bill that you don’t remember or that you know are incorrect should be reported immediately as they may not be mistake but signs of fraud.

Protecting yourself from credit card fraud isn’t difficult, but it does require some diligence. Simply paying attention to what you are doing with the card and what is showing up on your bill may not always be enough, but they’re a good place to start.

The Benefits Of Proxy Sites

by Richard R Fortuna

Maybe you’ve heard of proxy sites but have never used one. Or maybe you’re in a particular situation and thought that a proxy would be a good idea. Whatever your motive or modus operandi might be, you’ll find that sites offering proxy services make for excellent companions on the Internet. If you’ve never tried one before, here are a few reasons to start today.

Setting the Internet Free

Although Internet access is now common in most schools, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to browse all your favorite sites. Almost every school that offers wireless Internet access also enforces one kind of website blocking or another, such that sites like Facebook and MySpace are inaccessible. It might not sound like a big thing when you’re reading about it, but it’s a really big hassle when you spend a big chunk of each school day without access to your favorite sites.

Proxy sites are the quickest way to regain access to those important sites and ” yes ” social networks. Their non-blacklisted URLs let you surf under the radar of the server, so you’ll be able to access those banned sites, social networks and more risqu domains ” even when the administrators tell you otherwise.

At the same time, the school servers also won’t be able to track the sites that you visit. All they’ll see is a record of your visiting the URL of the proxy site, but no more than that. It’s a handy solution if you don’t want the school administrators nosing about your Internet activity.

For Your Eyes Only

It’s not just the school administrators who won’t be able to keep an eye on you. Proxy sites will also help you maintain your anonymity once you begin browsing the Internet. Websites nowadays are able to take note of your IP address and, with a couple of extra steps, track down your location and all but identify who you really are.

On top of that, third parties trying to keep tabs on your movements on the Internet will find it extremely difficult to follow you. That’s because they’ll end up seeing the IP address and details of the proxy that you used instead of your own. If you use different proxy sites for every browsing session, you could confuse trackers even more by taking on various IP addresses that point to places all over the world.

Do you visit sites that you’d prefer nobody else should know about? Are there parts of your Internet browsing habits that you’d rather not share with others? Proxy sites will help you achieve the kind of confidentiality and anonymity you want. The best part of it all is that you won’t even have to shell out a dime to be able to enjoy the privacy afforded by a proxy.

With the way technology and software has developed, it has become easy for anyone to monitor your activity on the Internet. It’s a disquieting thought, especially when you consider all the personal and private things you do online. Do you want to make your Internet browsing experience fun and worry-free? Proxy sites will be the only things you’ll need.

Why Use A Proxy Site?

by Richard R Fortuna

You’ve probably heard of the whole phenomenon of proxy sites, especially if you stay in or around a college campus. Proxy sites are easily some of the most useful tools you could get on the Internet, especially now that privacy and security are such top priorities. Here are a couple of reasons why you’d want to look for a proxy for your own use.

Liberating the Internet

Although many schools and institutions now feature free wireless Internet access, one big problem with those networks is that they tend to be severely limited. They commonly keep users from accessing sites like MySpace and Friendster, to the ire of many students. Even worse, some go so far as to banning more useful sites, simply because they’re not recognized and permitted by the network administrator.

But Internet users (collegiate ones in particular) can be very resourceful, hence the popularity of proxy sites today. They’re essentially near-empty domains that act as go-betweens for you and the sites you browse. You visit your favorite websites through the proxy site, and so work around the domain name policies set by the network administrator.

You’ll also avoid getting all your Internet activity logged by the server. Do you want to keep shopping online during your lunch hour without your boss knowing? Are Facebook quizzes your time fillers for all those free breaks? Proxy sites will let you keep accessing them, no matter what bans are in place.

Privacy, Please

Another advantage of proxy sites lies in the browsing records that reside within your own computer. An Internet browser typically takes note of all addresses typed into it by the user. But because you type the addresses into the site for the proxy instead of your browser’s address bar, no records of your browsing session are stored in your machine.

This comes especially handy if you want to visit sites that nobody else should know about. Do you want to keep those nightly visits to certain sites a secret from your roommate or parents? Proxy sites can make it happen; even if they snoop around on your computer, all they’ll see is the URL of the site you used.

Unless you take measures on your side, it’s very likely that there’s one third party or another that’s following your every step on the Internet. It’s a disquieting and unnerving thought, as if there’s a person always looking over your shoulder. Proxy sites put the Internet back into your control, making browsing a pleasant, personal and private experience once more.

Spy Cam: Because Your Home and Family Comes First

by Zoe Sharon

Our home may just be the safest place we could think of. But as the times dictate, even our home can be a danger zone when not well protected. Criminal minds are always waiting for the right opportunity to strike, so what can you do to increase your security at home? How can you leave your kids at home without worrying if they’ll be safe or not? This brings us to the use of a spy camera. A spy cam, when installed in the right places, can give you 24-hour surveillance and protection, giving you warning when potential danger could be nearby.

A spy camera is a surveillance device that can be used for security of your business or your home. It may take pictures, record or produce live video feeds of a certain event, and give you a view of what’s actually happening inside your house. They range from the smallest pinhole cameras, to discreet and covert types that easily blend inside your home.

A spy cam can be installed inside and outside the house, in which video feeds may be recorded or viewed live using a video monitor. Or if you’re away from home, you can even view it via the internet. Survey your property for suspicious persons walking around near your house and take precaution before anything bad happens!

You’re on a vacation trip and left your kids in the care of a nanny. You want to know if she is doing her job right or not. Just check your spy camera and know whether she’s taking care of your kids or mistreating them. No more lies this time, you have the evidence recorded, and you’ve seen it with your own eyes!

Making plans is important before getting your first spy cam. Either you use the wired or wireless type of camera, but the wireless is better since you prevent the hassles of tangled wires and trying to figure out where to place them. A wireless system gets set-up easily right out of the box, and into the spot you want to place extra security.

Covert cameras easily hide beneath furniture, radio, and clock. This makes your surveillance much more effective and efficient since it is hidden form plain sight and doesn’t attract attention. You are sure that you get the truth on what’s happening around your house.

It is also an important thing that your spy camera is weather-proof when installing one outside your home. Your camera will be exposed to harsh weather conditions and needs to be tough while still doing its job. Consider the lux rating of the camera: The lower it is, the better it is in performing under low lighting conditions.

Purchasing your first spy camera seems hard, especially if you’re not equipped with the technical skills. Choosing the right store locally or online can greatly help you in this quest. Take note of the stores that has detailed product specifications, clear quality standards and policies, and excellent customer service.

Our family and home are of utmost importance to us. Will we let anything or anyone compromise their safety and security? Setting up a spy camera in your home can greatly increase security and help fend off suspicious persons. Today’s times aren’t the same as yesterday. Our homes can’t be absolutely safe nowadays, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do something to improve that safety. With a spy cam, we better prevent peril from invading our homes by being on guard.
